Training Programs for Volunteers in the Aged Care Sector

Margaret Thorne one of the tutors at Coonara recently was awarded a scholarship to travel to the U.K. to research training programs below is an excerpt from her report, click on the button at left for the full story.

Introduction

The aim of my four week visit to the United Kingdom in September and October 2000 was to research established and successful training programs being conducted for volunteers in the aged care sector and to also gain some insight into how these people, once trained, can help the elderly through methods of advocacy and implemented schemes.
........trained volunteers can not only assist the elderly in many ways, alleviate the burdens of these people and brighten up their lives but also derive a lot of personal satisfaction from their charitable work, feel more fulfilled within themselves and contribute a great deal to society.......

We'll also teach you how to use the equipment. Adults and children of all ages are welcome to participate in this project

Living With Fire - a community writing project

On the 21st January, 1997, the Dandenong Ranges National Park was burning out of control. The fire was spreading towards Upper Ferntree Gully, with 40 degree heat and a hot north wind blowing. Many residents in the fire affected areas evacuated to Coonara House - some with pets and other rescued items. At the same time the School Holiday Program was running at Coonara, and the Holiday Program Coordinator was making arrangements to evacuate if necessary.

Following the January 1997 fires, Coonara Community House in conjunction with the Dandenong Ranges National Park Education Resource Centre, collected stories of local people's experiences of bushfire.

"What if.. local people's stories of the recession - late 1980s and early 1990s."
A Coonara Action Research Project

During the recession of the early 1990's, a group of local people met regularly at Coonara to research the way the recession had affected our community. The group was facilitated by Dr Yoland Wadsworth, from the Action Research Issues Centre. A Community Needs Study was conducted, and the group collected local people's stories about how the recession had touched their lives. The stories are of great interest and have proven to be a valuable resource. With funding from the Stegley Foundation, the stories were published in a book titled "What If...?"

If you would like to know more about this project, or if you would like a copy of the book, please contact Coonara or send $10 to Coonara Community House, P.O.Box 41, Upper Ferntree Gully, 3156
